Description of training
A modern procurement function supports the organisation's objectives at operational and strategic levels. Activities that deliver fast, measurable financial results include negotiation. Long-term initiatives that build sustainable competitive advantage and resilience to market risks are driven by strategic procurement management.
During the Strategic Category Management training, we focus on the areas that strengthen the company’s position at the strategic level.
The programme provides a logical, structured pathway from analysing the role that procurement plays in the organisation, to consciously managing relationships with internal business partners, defining and structuring a procurement strategy, to supplier relationship management (SRM). It concludes with translating strategy into negotiations and establishing principles of supplier collaboration that are fully aligned with the overarching strategy, rather than driven by short-term operational pressure.
Act like a procurement category CEO
As part of the workshop preparation, participants collect and structure information about the suppliers they actively work with. This stage enables them to move beyond traditional, transactional procurement thinking and adopt a broader, more strategic business perspective.
The result of the training is a complete category strategy developed individually by each participant for a selected material category. This strategy provides a practical decision-making tool to structure procurement activities and support cooperation with business partners.
The tools and methodology applied during the workshop are designed to be independently replicated and implemented across additional procurement categories within the organization, without the need for external support.
The methodology used in the training is based on procurement management best practices used by Fortune 500 organisations.
A key value of the programme lies in the fact that each participant implements these solutions, translating new skills into concrete business decisions already during the workshop.
Key Programme Topics
Based on structured templates and guidance provided by Eveneum, participants prepare for the workshop in advance. They complete the required information and gather input from their internal business partners.
We explore the role of the procurement function as a decision-making center that proactively influences the organization. We discuss and practice how to strengthen its position and collaborate effectively with internal business partners.
At this stage of the training, participants become familiar with the successive steps of building a procurement strategy. We move from analyzing the current state, through category segmentation, to selecting the appropriate procurement levers. Participants work with practical analytical tools and translate insights into concrete business decisions. We also leverage AI tools to support and enhance the development of robust procurement strategies.
We move from the category level to the supplier level. Together with each participant, we conduct a supplier classification, assess supplier capabilities, and develop a structured supplier evaluation framework, including a supplier scorecard. Risk is analyzed at two levels: across the entire procurement category and at the individual supplier level. Participants then define a risk mitigation plan to safeguard business continuity and strategic objectives.
We discuss best practices in communication skills essential for discussing strategy within the organization and presenting it at executive board level. Participants prepare and refine a presentation of their own procurement category strategy, strengthening both clarity of message and leadership presence.
