Team negotiations - what is worth paying attention to?

By definition, we speak of team negotiation when a minimum of two representatives from each party are involved in the talks. However, it is worth distinguishing between negotiation groups and negotiation teams.

Negotiations are often conducted in a 1:1 configuration, with representatives from both sides meeting each other, conducting , and then presenting the outcome to the other stakeholders. However, there are situations in which it makes more sense to involve more than one representative in the negotiation process. When is it advisable to use team negotiation and what should be taken into account?

Characteristics of team negotiation

By definition, we speak of team negotiation when a minimum of two representatives from each party are involved in the talks. However, it is worth distinguishing between negotiation groups and negotiation teams. The mere presence of another person does not yet mean that the negotiation being conducted is a team negotiation.

What certainly stands out negotiations team, in addition to the larger number of participants in the talks, are, above all, the specific competences of each of them and their active participation in the process, as well as their knowledge of and pursuit of team goals. The negotiating team must be a single organism, striving for the same thing through the use of individual parties - i.e. the fulfilment of the role of each team member.

When is it worth betting on team negotiation?

Negotiations Teamwork is by no means an easy task. Individual personalities of team members, differing temperaments, as well as individual goals can prove to be serious barriers.

Nevertheless, there are situations in which it is best for the negotiation process to bet on team negotiation. When is it worth doing so?

  • When the negotiation process is so complex that a variety of competences, knowledge or skills are required to get the talks right;
  • When negotiations provide an opportunity to introduce inclusive and innovative solutions;
  • When the stakeholders are different groups;
  • When it is necessary to demonstrate the strength of the negotiating party's team and the coherence of the company's strategy and mission;

What to look out for when betting on team negotiations?

As mentioned above, team negotiations are among the most difficult. Indeed, a clear and coherent strategy must be prepared to enhance the success of the negotiation process.

Aspects to consider when choosing team negotiations are:

  • Selection of appropriate members of the negotiating team, taking into account their individual predispositions and objectives
  • Appointment of chief negotiator
  • Adequate preparation of team members for the negotiation process including internal debate
  • Assigning each team member a role in the negotiation process through which they can demonstrate their own skills and competencies
  • Maintaining open communication between members of the negotiating team
